The Healing Foundation has released its easy to use Working with the Stolen Generations: understanding trauma fact sheet for aged care workers, managers, nurses, lifestyle staff, support workers and home care teams.

The resource explains how everyday aspects of aged care including uniforms, strict routines, loss of control over daily decisions, or shared rooms can unintentionally bring back memories of childhood separation or institutionalisation. It offers practical ways to reduce distress: providing clear choices, involving trusted advocates, using gentle language and body language, and creating environments that support dignity and autonomy.

The fact sheet was co-developed with survivors and sector partners to guide safe, respectful care for ageing Stolen Generations survivors and their families. It also supports the sector as it adapts to the Aged Care Act, which came into effect on 1 November 2025. The new Act requires services to provide rights-based, trauma-informed and culturally safe care. This resource from The Healing Foundation is designed to complement this shift, offering practical, survivor-led guidance that helps services meet the Act’s expectations in a supportive, constructive way.

“Survivors have told us what harm looks like and how we can be safer, and this resource reflects their voices and lived experience,” The Healing Foundation CEO Shannan Dodson said.

“By listening to survivors and applying trauma-informed, culturally safe approaches, we can ensure older Stolen Generations survivors receive the care, respect and understanding they deserve.”
