In 2024, Interim First Nations Aged Care Commissioner Andrea Kelly provided a report containing a series of recommendations on how the Government can improve aged care services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. This report was titled: Transforming Aged Care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. While Andrea is no longer in this role, she was a big supporter of CHSP, attending and speaking at many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community of Practice sessions facilitated by the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Sector Support and Development Working Group. Andrea's successor - Jodi Cassar, is attending an upcoming meeting with the Working Group in August where we'll meet her for the first time.

In July 2026, the Australian Government has provided an official resonse to the report - Government Response to the Interim First Nations Aged Care Commissioner's Report. The Government has:

• Accepted Recommendation 1: Publish the Transforming Aged Care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Report
• Accepted in principle Recommendation 2: Commit to develop a 10-year transformation plan
• Accepted Recommendation 3: Agree in-principle to the proposed model for an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commissioner. Funding for the role of Interim First Nations Aged Care Commission has been extended until June 2027 while the permanent Commissioner role is being established
• Notes Recommendation 4: Urgent and time sensitive recommendations
