COTA Queensland CHSP Provider Update
Council of the Ageing (COTA) Queensland's Sector Support and Development Team is hosting Anglicare's Suicide Prevention for Seniors Program. This session is for CHSP and other providers.
Program Overview
The program is underpinned by evidence and equips participants with practical strategies to engage in empathetic conversation, assess suicidal ideation, provide support through safety planning and referrals. In addition, the training covers common causes of suicidal behaviour and particular issues surrounding suicide in older adults including risk and protective factors.
The session is interactive, allowing for questions throughout. Delivered as a 3-hour workshop online via Zoom. Breaks are scheduled at the end of each hour.
A resource pack is provided upon course completion and invitation to Anglicare's monthly free Older Persons’ Mental Health Webinar Series.
Self-directed CPD points are available, and certificates can be provided upon request.
Would you know what to do if an older person you support was having thoughts of suicide?
Generally, when we think of suicide, older adults don’t come to mind. But Australian men and women aged 85 and over have the highest age-specific suicide rates. Older adults are also the least likely to use mental health services. That’s where you come in.
If you work with older people and would like to learn how to support someone experiencing thoughts of suicide, this program can provide the skills you need. Run by Anglicare and funded by the Australian Government, the Suicide Prevention for Seniors Program is for anyone who works with or supports older people.
The Suicide Prevention for Seniors Program is QIP accredited against the Suicide Prevention Australia Standards.
The program is accredited by QIP, meeting all Suicide Prevention Australia Standards. This is a valuable opportunity for professional development at no cost, thanks to sponsorship from the Australian Government.
Providers who have attended this program have spoken very highly of it.
All times shown are Queensland time (AEST).
For interstate events, reminders & calendar invites may display in the local event time.
COTA Queensland’s Sector Support and Development team believes every child has the right to be safe, to feel safe and to be protected from harm.
Guided by our organisation’s safeguarding framework, our team has completed a structured risk assessment of our sector-facing activities and undertaken targeted training to strengthen our ability to prevent, identify and respond to child abuse.
We are committed to acting promptly and appropriately if concerns are raised or disclosures occur, and to supporting safe practices across the sector.
