Connecting with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and Elders
A National CHSP Leadership Forum
The Statement of Rights coming in the new Aged Care Act enshrines the right for older people to receive aged care services that are culturally safe, culturally appropriate, trauma-aware and healing-informed; and for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people a right to opportunities and assistance to stay connected to their community, Country and Island Home.
COTA Queensland is pleased to form part of an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander CHSP Sector Support and Development National Working Group. This working group has been established to develop the capacity of CHSP and in-home aged care providers in the sector to provide genuine and consumer-led support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders and communities.
With Interim First Nations Aged Care Commissioner Andrea Kelly as our first keynote speaker, the working group has developed a national collaborative leadership forum. Andrea Kelly has engaged with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders and communities across the Australian continent and will share stories and information about what is needed to strengthen cultural safety and improve Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ access to aged care services and the quality of their experiences in aged care.
This forum is open to all CHSP executive leaders and board members, regardless of size of your organisation or stage in this ongoing journey building cultural safety. This is an opportunity to learn from other providers’ experience and/or contribute to conversations about an aged care sector that not only meets requirements but strives for the right to cultural connection, safety and healing.
The forum will run over two 90-minute sessions. Participants will leave session 1 with:
