  • Delay of Aged Care Act commencement

Message received from the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing 4/6/25

The Australian Government has announced that the new Aged Care Act 2024 will be briefly deferred. The government will recommend to the Governor-General, Her Excellency the Honourable Sam Mostyn AC, that she proclaim the commencement of the new Act to be to 1 November 2025.

Feedback from the sector supports a brief deferral of the start date. It will mean providers and advocates have more time to talk to older people to help them understand how aged care is changing, including the new Support at Home program.

The Department is working to deliver the new Act and Support at Home in partnership with the Transition Taskforce, advisory groups, peak bodies and advocacy organisations to develop the legislation and consult on the Aged Care Rules.

The Department will continue to produce guidance and training to support the sector to get the implementation right.
