Overview

This engaging and interactive two-hour online workshop supports aged care providers to understand and apply trauma-aware and healing-informed practice in the delivery of funded aged care services. Grounded in contemporary evidence and aligning with Standard 1 of the Strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards, the session explores how trauma can shape the way people engage with services, relationships, choice, communication, and care. Participants will be supported to move beyond compliance language and consider practical ways to embed safety, trust, choice, collaboration, empowerment, and healing-informed approaches into everyday interactions with aged care recipients.

Session outline

  • Setting the context: Outcome 1.1 of the Strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards, person-centred care, and the requirement to deliver services that are trauma aware and healing informed.
  • Understanding trauma: How trauma, cumulative adversity and intergenerational experiences can influence wellbeing, behaviour, communication, trust, and engagement with aged care services.
  • Trauma-aware practice: Recognising possible trauma impacts without making assumptions or requiring disclosure.
  • Healing-informed approaches: Building environments and relationships that promote safety, connection, dignity, autonomy, identity, strengths, and hope.
  • Applying the learning: Practical strategies for communication, care planning, responding to distress, supporting choice, and embedding trauma-aware principles into service delivery.
  • Reflection and action planning: Identifying realistic next steps for participants, teams, and organisations.
