Overview

Culture can influence how we communicate, build trust and understand each other, and in aged care is no different. Language, communication styles, family roles and cultural expectations are all in play when engaging with older people from multicultural backgrounds. Being prepared to navigate these differences is an important part of effective and culturally responsive aged care.

What will it cover

This practical, interactive webinar is designed for frontline aged care workers, coordinators and volunteers, and will explore how to communicate respectfully and confidently with older people and families across cultural and language differences.

What you’ll explore:

  • Different communication styles and expectations
  • Assumptions about eye contact, touch, personal space and authority
  • Using respectful language, tone and body language
  • Communicating through family members and interpreters
  • Checking understanding without causing embarrassment
  • Responding when cultural expectations differ from workplace practice

Through realistic scenarios, polls and activities, you’ll explore ways to respond to everyday situations, moving beyond “being respectful” to knowing what that can look like in practice.
