Overview

This practical session supports frontline workers to recognise how power can operate when they enter an older person’s home and provide services on behalf of an organisation. Workers may bring access to information, services and organisational processes, as well as authority connected to their role. This can affect the interaction even when their intentions are respectful and positive.

Participants will consider how language, assumptions, time pressures, task-focused routines and organisational requirements can affect an older person’s choice, dignity, trust and sense of control. They will explore how age, disability, culture, language, race, gender, sexuality, socioeconomic circumstances and other intersecting experiences may influence who is listened to, believed or given meaningful choice.

The emphasis is on practical action. Frontline workers are not expected to resolve systemic inequality themselves, but they can notice power imbalances, adjust their approach, support the older person’s voice and raise concerns when organisational processes create barriers.

What will we cover

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

• Understand what power, privilege and marginalisation mean and how they can affect an older person’s experience of aged care services.
• Recognise how a worker’s role, assumptions, everyday routines and service requirements can influence an older person’s choices, voice and sense of safety and inclusion.
• Use practical approaches that help older people feel respected, heard and included, and remain in control of decisions affecting their lives.
• Know what to do when a barrier or unfair situation is noticed, including adjusting their approach and raising concerns when needed.

Frontline staff / Aged Care Professionals. This session will not be recorded. Please only register if you are able to attend.
