Overview

The session will help leaders consider how their workforce support, supervision, operational decisions and service systems contribute to delivering services consistently with the Statement of Rights. It will also explore how leadership and governance practices can support relevant expectations within the strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards, while recognising that the specific Standards applying to each organisation will depend on its registration category and services.

Leaders will explore how formal authority, informal influence and organisational priorities affect whose knowledge is heard, how decisions are made and how concerns are received. They will also consider how to support staff working in older people’s homes to recognise role-based power, maintain appropriate boundaries without becoming controlling, respond to intersecting experiences of marginalisation and navigate tensions between organisational requirements and individual choice.

The session connects personal leadership behaviour with supervision, workforce practice, service design and organisational accountability. It supports leaders to create conditions where staff can raise concerns, reflect honestly on practice and seek guidance when policies, processes or operational pressures may be limiting an older person’s rights, voice or access.

What will we cover

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

• Understand how power, privilege and marginalisation can shape leadership decisions, workplace culture, staff practice and older people’s experiences.
• Recognise how organisational policies, routines, priorities and service requirements can create or reduce barriers for older people.
• Support frontline workers to recognise the power they carry when working in older people’s homes and deliver safe, inclusive services that support autonomy, dignity and choice.
• Use practical leadership approaches to bring the Statement of Rights and relevant strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards into supervision, decision-making, service delivery and continuous improvement.
