Ageing in Your Community

Project Overview

We invited you to share your thoughts and experiences of ageing in your community and the role the Commonwealth Home Support Program plays in creating communities where people can age well.

Australia’s Aged Care system has experienced significant change over recent years and more change is expected as a result of the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety. One of the recommendations from this and previous reviews is to create a single care in the home support program. This would combine many of the services of the current Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) and Home Care Packages (HCP) into one single program.

The Commonwealth Home Support Programme grew out of the old Home and Community Care program (HACC) and the organisations funded under this program often have significant community ownership and trust especially in regional and remote communities. For this project we are talking with a range of stakeholders across Queensland, in particular from regional, rural, and remote areas to deepen our understanding of the strengths Commonwealth Home Support Programme funded organisations bring to communities. We are also interested in learning how these services interact with other supports in the community to create places and spaces where people can age well.

In Stage One we invited you to share your thoughts and experiences of ageing in regional, rural and remote communities across Queensland, highlighting those components of communities that support people to age well. This allowed us to deepen our understanding of the experiences of people in various communities, through hearing about the challenges, the impact of COVID-19, what is working well, and what could make a difference. The Summary Report from the Survey is available here

The aim of Stage Two was to understand how aged care supports and services, as well as the broader community and social infrastructure, foster communities where people can live and age well. In April, May and June we invited you to share your thoughts in particular on the Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) and the role this and other services and community-based initiatives play in creating communities where people can age well. What you told us is currently being summarised and will be shared with you soon. Your contributions will inform our ongoing feedback to government and other identified organisations.
