Updates & Resources

  • Clarification of rules around urgent referral codes and assessment delays

The Department has provided the following information to Sector Support and Development Providers, to assist in clarifying the process for CHSP Providers.

Urgent services where there is a significant risk of harm

    • The My Aged Care contact centre can refer a client directly to a CHSP registered provider if there is an immediate risk to the older person’s health or safety and services are not available through other means.

    • The circumstances where there is an urgent need for services to start immediately will vary. Referrers will make judgments on a case-by-case basis on whether a client is at significant risk of harm if services are not commenced immediately.

    • Examples of CHSP services which may be appropriate include:

      • Nursing for wound care

      • Transport to a specialist medical appointment

      • Delivery of meals

      • Personal care

      • Other support services due to the absence of a carer, such as flexible respite.

    • Access to these services will depend on the availability of local providers, noting there can be delays in accessing some services due to high demand.

    • The Department is aware of the delay in assessments and clients are encouraged to stay in touch with My Aged Care for updates on the timing of their assessment.

It was discussed verbally that if a provider decides to commence the service first, it is suggested that the provider support the client to call My Aged Care for an urgent assessment, within 5 days of the service commencing.
