Overview

This introductory session equips CHSP providers with the knowledge and confidence to apply supported decision-making principles in everyday practice. It responds directly to legislative obligations, including those outlined in the Aged Care Rights Principles, Support at Home Manual V3, and CHSP Manual 2024–2025.

What’s covered

During this session we will cover:

  • Explain the principles and intent behind supported decision-making within the aged care system
  • Distinguish between supported and substitute decision-making and understand when each applies
  • Demonstrate how to uphold the rights, dignity, and autonomy of older people when providing CHSP services
  • Identify practical approaches for embedding SDM in daily interactions and service delivery
  • Recognise their roles and responsibilities under the New Aged Care Act 2024, CHSP Manual, and Strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards
  • Respond appropriately when clients experience fluctuating or diminished capacity, using least-restrictive and rights-aligned approaches
